Tor wyścigowy powstał jako Österreichring (tłumaczenie: Austrian Circuit) i gościł Grand Prix Austrii przez 18 kolejnych lat, od 1970 do 1987 roku. Następnie został skrócony, przebudowany i przemianowany na A1-Ring (A Eins-Ring). Ponownie gościł Grand Prix Austrii od 1997 do 2003 roku.
Kiedy Formuła 1 przerosła tor, został opracowany plan rozszerzenia układu. Części toru, w tym pit-stopy i główna trybuna, zostały zburzone. Jednak prace budowlane zostały wstrzymane, a tor pozostał bezużyteczny przez kilka lat, zanim został zakupiony przez Dietricha Mateschitza z Red Bulla i odbudowany. Nazwany Red Bull Ring, tor został ponownie otwarty 15 maja 2011 roku i następnie gościł rundę sezonu 2011 DTM oraz rundę mistrzostw 2011 F2. Formuła 1 powróciła na tor w sezonie 2014, a MotoGP powrócił na tor w 2016 roku.
