The Austrian MotoGP served up an eventful Sunday race packed with overtakes, penalties and late drama. Marc Márquez battled through to claim his long-awaited first win at the Red Bull Ring, fending off Marco Bezzecchi and a charging Fermín Aldeguer. With mistakes from key names and several incidents throughout the field, it was a race to remember.
Conditions were mostly sunny with a few clouds as the lights went out. Bezzecchi and Márquez both launched well and moved to the front, while Álex Márquez slipped to fourth. Down the main straight, Márquez and his Ducati team-mate Francesco Bagnaia fought hard for second as Álex defended from Pedro Acosta and Enea Bastianini – while also carrying a long-lap penalty from Brno.
On lap two, Márquez cleared Bagnaia and held the place. After two laps the top ten read: Bezzecchi, Márquez, Bagnaia, Álex Márquez, Acosta, Bastianini, Brad Binder, Raúl Fernández, Aldeguer and Joan Mir. A lap later Bastianini ran wide at Turn 1 and lost ground.
Lap four saw Álex serve his long-lap, dropping to 11th. Further back, Jorge Martín was edging towards the points from 15th, while Bagnaia came under pressure from Acosta. Bezzecchi still led with around six-tenths in hand, though Márquez was gradually reeling him in.
By lap six Álex was scrapping with Johann Zarco for tenth, and Fernández was attacking Binder for fifth. At the end of lap seven, Fernández dived past Binder at the final corner, pushing him slightly wide and opening the door for two more riders to slip through.
On lap eight Binder received an early track-limits warning. After several laps stuck behind Zarco, Álex moved back into the top ten. Up front Márquez latched onto Bezzecchi’s rear wheel. Meanwhile, it was a tough afternoon for Yamaha, with all riders outside the top 15.
At lap 12 Márquez continued to shadow Bezzecchi, while Aldeguer caught Acosta. The top ten at that stage: Bezzecchi, Márquez, Bagnaia, Acosta, Aldeguer, Fernández, Bastianini, Mir, Binder, Álex Márquez.
Just past half-distance yellow flags flew as Martín crashed out. Soon after, Fabio Quartararo picked up a track-limits warning. Bastianini began to climb, taking sixth from Fernández.
On lap 20 Acosta and Aldeguer both dispatched Bagnaia for third and fourth. Márquez then attacked Bezzecchi on the straight (there was almost contact) before Bezzecchi briefly snatched the lead back. Moments later Márquez completed the move and stayed ahead. Aldeguer pulled a bold pass on Acosta that stuck.
A lap later the race was neutralised again when Fabio Di Giannantonio’s bike caught fire, bringing out more yellows. The order: Márquez, Bezzecchi, Aldeguer, Acosta, Bastianini, Bagnaia, Mir, Binder, Fernández, Álex Márquez.
Bastianini soon eased past Bagnaia, who looked to be struggling and then slipped further down the order. With three laps to go Binder tried a move on Bagnaia, ran wide and lost places. Bagnaia was then instructed to drop one position for gaining an advantage off-track, and Binder also got back through.
Márquez closed it out with a composed final lap to seal his first Austrian GP victory. Aldeguer finished second after a late push, with Bezzecchi completing the podium. Álex Márquez hounded Fernández to the flag in the fight behind.
